George Marshall collection, 1899-1957

George H. Marshall (1879-1963) was in the United States Indians Service from 1903-1905, beginning as teacher at the Havasupai school. This Collection is comprised of 68 photographic images of the Havasupai school and of the Grand Canyon, Marshall’s diaries and articles written about his experiences, school materials including a class list and attendance records, various correspondence and samples of hair from four Native Americans.

George H. Marshall (1879-1963) was born in Leroy Kansas. Although he took work at Columbia University in New York, he received his AB and MA degrees from the University of Kansas at Lawrence. From 1903 until 1905 he was in the United States Indians Service, beginning as teacher at the Havasupai school. During his time there Marshall kept a diary and wrote several articles.
